Weekly Updates
Here's the place to get all the news 4th grade has to offer
Week of May 6thMath Math:
What is Singapore Math? While it still correlates with common core and Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards, the belief of Singapore math is designed to deepen children's understanding of math and problem solving: not to pass a test, but instead to apply the skills in various situations, both novel and real world alike. Students are taught in a continuum of skills from number sense and algebra to geometry-- and so much more! Singapore Math (Math in Focus) is typically at least one grade level ahead... So all students will be going into a depth of knowledge at beyond a 4th grade level. Math Facts: It is VERY important that students be practicing their math facts frequently. Students should know their multiplication tables (1-12) as well as their division counterparts (such as 3 x 12 =36 so 36÷ 3 =12) Please practice these as often as possible, a few minutes a day (I recommend doing so in the car, during commutes, if you find it hard to find time) Students will be working on Tessellations this on Monday. Their tessellation project is due on Friday. The expectations are:
-The shape is rotational in tessellation -The pattern covers the entire page -The images are detailed and colored (it is neat, and appears that effort goes into it) For the rest of the week, we will be discussing tables, charts, and line graphs. The students seem to have a firm understanding of this on a basic level. Instead we're going to look more at interpreting data, rather than just listing it. We talked about how many jobs have to not only represent data, but actually use the data to make informed decisions. If any of you have real life examples to pass along, please do so! Social StudiesThis week in social studies, we will be working on the project for social science. We will be looking at how our responsibilities as good community members include trying to better that community! And what better way to do so, than by creating a project that inspires, and teaches the community in means of conservation. We will discuss what our projects will be focused on, and come up with the best medium to present them to our given audience.
ScienceIn science, we will be working on project based learning for water conservation. Students will be creating sort of project (i/e: PSA or invention) that will be used in aiding conservation efforts. For more information, visit Mrs. Ganssle's blog

Reading and Language ArtsReading:
Our students LOVED the novel, Holes, so much that we are starting a new novel study this week! We will begin reading the first of the series of Lemony Snicket- The Bad Beginning. Each day, we will read 1-2 chapters, then complete an assignment on Google Classroom. There will be quizzes occasionally, then one comprehension test at the end. *We do encourage our class to not watch the movie or series until after we finish the novel. It is much more fun to let the story unfold on a page before the screen. :-) Students are are expected to complete 25 minutes of nightly reading.
It is a wonderful habit to be in to be able to summarize the reading each night. Be sure to ask questions such as: -Who are the Main Characters of the story? -What are the characters doing? Why are they doing that? -How have the characters changed throughout the story? -What lesson does this story have that applies to real life? -What will happen next? Why is that? Writing:
Students will be beginning their new creative writing assignment this week. As a class, we will be reading different Cinderella stories from around the world. Students will then create their own unique Cinderella book to read to their buddies the last week of school. Spalding:
There is spelling this week. It is our last week for spelling! There will be 20 words. Spelling words can be found on the "forms" page if they were misplaced. |
